SHORTNESS OF BREATH: PANIC DISORDER AND HYPERVENTILATION
Does Panic Disorder Take Your Breath Away?
By Sheryl Ankrom, About..com
Many people with panic disorder experience shortness of breath or sensations that they are smothering. Most people describe this as a feeling that they can't get enough air into their lungs. Since we need to breathe to sustain life, these symptoms quickly bring about a sense of panic and fear. If you feel like you can't catch your breath or are smothering, it may seem logical to conclude that you may faint, or even die, from lack of oxygen. But, in reality, these sensations are not life threatening or dangerous.
Hyperventilation and Panic-Related Breathlessness
The majority of time, panic-related breathlessness can be linked to the way you are breathing. When experiencing anxiety or panic, your breathing may become quick, short and shallow. This is called (thoracic) breathing and can result in “over breathing” or “hyperventilation”. It may also be possible that poor breathing techniques are actually triggers for anxiety and panic.
When you breathe in air, blood cells receive oxygen and release carbon dioxide (CO2). CO2 is a waste product that is carried back through your body and exhaled. Hyperventilation, or over breathing, reduces the level of carbon dioxide and calcium in the blood. This causes the brain's blood vessels to constrict and leads to physical symptoms, including dizziness, numbness, headache and others. These symptoms can be frightening and tend to cause considerate psychological distress along with increased panic and anxiety.
When most people think of someone hyperventilating, they tend to visualize a traumatic scene with someone outwardly gasping for breath. While this type of hyperventilation may occur, it can also be much more subtle and not easily identified. You may not be “gasping” for air, but you may sense that your breathing is not as productive as it should be, and you feel a little short of breath. You may experience dizziness, numbness, headache and other disturbing symptoms, that you may not even associate with the way you are breathing. It is possible that subtle changes in your breathing pattern, such as breathing more from your chest rather than your stomach, are causing you to hyperventilate.
Some studies have linked panic disorder to hyperventilation syndrome. In someone with PD, improper breathing may cause enough of a change in the CO2 and calcium levels in the blood to produce many unpleasant symptoms associated with hyperventilation.
Common Symptoms Associated with Panic-Related Hyperventilation
Everyone is different, so you may experience other symptoms of hyperventilation or poor breathing techniques that are not included here. This list is not meant to self-diagnose your condition. Shortness of breath and the symptoms presented below may be associated with other, more serious, conditions. It is important to see your primary care physician to rule out other possibilities for your symptoms.
Any of the following symptoms may be related to improper breathing or hyperventilation:
Dizziness
Feeling faint
Sensations of smothering
Numbness or tingling sensations
Sensations of choking
Rapid heartbeat
Chest Pain
These symptoms can be quite frightening and lead to troubling emotional symptoms, including increased anxiety, panic and fear.
What About Breathing Into a Paper Bag?
Many people have heard that someone who is hyperventilating should breathe into a paper bag. The theory is that by breathing exhaled CO2, your body can quickly regain the CO2 lost due to hyperventilation. This technique has been shown to be somewhat effective, but it is not without certain risks. For example, when you're breathing in and out of a paper bag, you are not getting a good supply of oxygen. If it turns out you were not hyperventilating, but having an asthma attack, breathing into a paper bag could make things much worse. Another consideration is that studies have linked increased CO2, with increased panic and anxiety. If you have PD, using the paper bag method may trigger a panic attack, which won't help you breathe easier. The bottom line is before using this technique, check with your doctor.
Things You Can Do Now to Breathe Easier
You can counteract your breathing troubles by learning to take slow deep and even breaths, you will be able to breathe easier. This is the way newborn babies naturally breathe. You are also probably using this pattern of breathing when you are in a relaxed stage of sleep.

SHE PUT ON HER HELMET BY CHERYL V.
SHE PUT ON HER HELMET
She put on her helmet to go for a ride
On a four-wheeler which made her, sigh
Her foot wouldn't slide over the four-wheeler, easy
So, she got help from her guy who turned her into one, so sleazy
Then, as soon, as he hopped onto the four-wheeler
Down the hilly streets, he went aspeeding
She was holding on with all her life
While on his mind, was, “Should I have her as my wife?”
She put on her helmet to go for a ride
On a four-wheeler which made her, sigh
Her foot wouldn't slide over the four-wheeler, easy

THIS WOMAN BY CHERYL V.
THIS WOMAN
This woman walked up to a horse, named Ranger
She had a carrot in her hand in the horse's range
The horse seemed to be in a peppy mood
And was wearing no horseshoes
At the time, she was about to go on a walk up the mountains
At the time, she couldn't ride the horse because it wasn't mounted
So, she held a carrot out to the horse
But, somehow, her hand got caught in its mouth
At that time, someone had to pull her hand out of its mouth
She thought it was cool
Until she, almost, jumped out of her shoes
Then, she, almost, laughed at Ranger
Until she noticed how bruised, her finger was at range
So, then, she grew afraid of the horse
And didn't know what to do, of course
No longer, was Ranger, her friend
But all the horse wanted was her love in the end
So, then, she had the heart to forgive the poor horse
Because, after all, the horse had been trying to be nice, of course
And after all, the horse was, only, an animal
And it hadn't met to grab onto her fingers as of love, his heart was full

TOWN OF THE UNFORTUNATE BY CHERYL V.
TOWN OF THE UNFORTUNATE
“Hey, there; you’d better get out of my way.”
This guy, Mack, earned his reputation as a ten-shooter because this became his favorite phrase.
“Who do you, think, you’re talking to May I ask?”
Mack’s curling his fingers around his ten-shooter, ready to go after anyone including Pocket Face.
Jus then, his girlfriend, Marty, walked into the bar.
“Okay, Mack,” said Pocket Face, “meet my girl, Marty, here.”
As he took his girl by the hand, Mack grew even more furious.
Sensing what he was about to do, Pocket Face took his seat right next to Mark, not feeling afraid of him because he can’t trust her to back him up whenever he’s in big trouble.
So, then, Pocket Face’s eyes met Mack’s eyes. Suddenly afraid of Mack, his girl, Marty, upon noticing Fire Face, Mack’s buddy, enter the bar, Pocket Face said to Marty, “Let’s get out of here. Fire Face is one of Mack’s buddies. So, you don’t want to fool around with him. He’ll shoot your pants off if you’re not careful.”’
Not saying a word back to him, Marty fled out of the bar without ordering anything. Pocket Face followed her.
Upon reaching the desert-like sand outside, she said to her daughter, Mary, “C’mon, this is no bar to hang out at.”
So, the two jumped onto their horses, and then, took off through the desert not knowing where they were headed next.
As Fire Face peeked out a window in the bar, he then, said to Mack, “Guess who jus got on their way? Marty and her funky daughter, Mary, both wearing plenty of rouge on their faces.”
“What do you have on your mind, Mack?”
“I’ll tell you what we’ll do. Mary, always, seems, as though, she has to lean on her mom for help. C’mon, Fire Face, let’s give them what they deserve.”
As the two gulped down their beers, and threw their beer glasses, breaking a window, the two raced out of the bar.
Upon hopping onto a deserted stagecoach, Mack said to Fire Face, “I’m going to shoot them with all my might until they’re dead as doornails.”
So, then, Fire Face and Mack were on their way after Marty and her sleazy daughter, Mary.
A few miles later in the hot sun, Fire Face and Mack, finally, tracked them down. Now, that the stagecoach has caught up with the two women, suddenly, they were aware of the outlaws being on their tail.
Marty’s horse, then, fell over, but Mary’s horse was well on its way across the scorching desert.
So, upon Marty being, suddenly, aware of Fire Face and Mack, walking up to her as she’s getting back up onto her feet upon being thrown off her horse, she wouldn’t dare act scared around these two.
However, before she had any chance to draw her gun, these two guys were on top of her. And Fire Face was laughing, one mean laugh, as he and Mack were pointing their pistols at her face.
So, then, Mack said to her, “C’mon, with us over to the stagecoach,” as they half-dragged her over to it. While they were, Mack said to her with both him and Mack, having mean looks on their faces, “Don’t you dare say one word, or I’ll shoot you, dead.”
Upon reaching the stagecoach, Fire Face held onto her arms, as Mack tied rope on her hands and feet. As he was, she, really, felt, as though, her heart was jumping out of her chest.
Then, jus before the guys tossed her into the stagecoach, Mack tied this blue handkerchief around her mouth. So, she wouldn’t be able to scream, ‘bloody murder”.
However, she was so shocked, that she couldn’t even get a word out if she wanted to.
While Mack made sure, she didn’t try to escape through biting on the handkerchief or rope, Fire Face, upon spotting her pistol in the sand, ran over to where her horse, struggled to get up, he grabbed her gun out of the sand. Then, so, no one would find it, he tossed it into a river, nearby.
As he ran back to the stagecoach, he had to leap onto it because Mack was about to take off without him.
In the meanwhile, upon Marty, trying to chew on the handkerchief around her mouth, Mack slapped her on the face, leaving her, stunned. AS he did, she fell right into the stagecoach, and immediately, this shock knocked her out.
So, then, Fire Face kept a lookout for Marty, while Mack, after grabbing a hold on the horses’ reins, said to the horses, “Giddy up, let’s get moving.”
Not much time later, upon Mack and Pocket Face arriving at the other end of the river, the sand gave away. And all of them, then, lost their lives and drowned upon the stagecoach, sinking into quicksand in the desert. As this happened, all of them were thrown out of the stagecoach and into the river where they all ended up drowning.
Townsfolk and Marty’s daughter, Mary, never were able to find any of the bodies after a frantic search of the river, upon finding out, Marty was missing some hours later around dusk.

THIS HAS BEEN ONE NICE TRIP BY CHERYL V.
THIS HAS BEEN ONE NICE TRIP
This has been one nice trip to North Carolina. While there, I felt like all the mountains around the cabin, were all lush with nature. All the cows, especially, what someone called, “hippy cows”, were something else because the mother and daddy cows held back the baby from going up to the fence. Although, the parents were suspicious of humans being near and humans, who just wanted to eye all the buffaloes there at this big ranch.
What was very surprising to all us, residents, was how the owner of this buffalo farm, actually, allowed all of us to go down the mountains. So, that we all could get a good view of all the beautiful buffalo over at this ranch. Couldn’t get over how friendly the owner was to all of us. The owner even allowed Florence to take pictures of all the buffalo.
Although, the mountains were very steep, we all, still, managed to walk up and down the grassy mountains.
Another thing, I just loved doing in North Carolina, was walking up and down the hilly streets. All the Southern folks are very friendly.
Even this one woman, who, really, doesn’t know me, took a walk up and down this one hilly street. Also, we stopped over at one of her friends’ house. And there, the owner wanted us to stay for dinner. But I and the woman couldn’t stay long. We both had to get on our way.
Whenever I go down to North Carolina, I never want to have to go back home, again, because it’s so different down south. What I can’t get over is how all the Southern folks welcome others, even strangers, into their homes.

ONE DAY BY CHERYL V.
ONE DAY
One day, I visited Heartbreak Hotel
While there, this young woman wanted to show everyone, her hotels
All the guys, there, wooed at her
Then she knew for sure, all the guys loved her
When she would pull things on them
Tonight, the hotel turned into mayhem
When one guy came through the main door
To everyone’s surprise, he mooned that woman near the door
Then, he asked her to join him in his hotel room
Because inside his suite, there was plenty of room
For the guy to think about how she would be in his bed
So, he rolled off the bed
The next thing, she knew, he landed on his head
Because she knocked him off the bed as his body felt like lead
He was out for a minute or two
So, she started turning blue
But, then, she helped him onto his feet
And then, before he realized what was going on, he fled
Out of his room, and out of his head
She was so surprised at him, before her head
The night was very much in bloom
This meant, tonight, she would end up alone in the hotel room
But outside in the moonlight
The guy, she was jus in bed with, was out of sight
Since, it was too late for her to try to find this guy
Because she let him go, she was all the wiser
Because guys seemed to be plentiful
And she didn’t want some jerk, named Jonathan Seagull
In her life because he didn’t know better
He never did send her, any letters
Explaining why he took off on her like he did
Partly, because he had turned into a katydid
