EXERCISE HELPS DEPRESSION

EXERCISE HELPS DEPRESSION

You've probably read about the research that indicates that exercise can help depression. If you're like me, you may wonder how that information can help when just getting out of bed can feel overwhelming. While looking around Paige Waehner's Exercise site here on About, I ran across an article about this topic that I found motivating. In this article, Paige explains why exercise can benefit depression and she gives some simple tips to help you get started. I fine her recommendations both realistic and helpful. If you are interested in getting healthier and feeling better about yourself, but feel overwhelmed by the thought of exercise, I'd recommend reading this article.

A lot of the time, exercising just makes me more depressed.

(2)Elizabeth Hensley says:
I must be the exception that proves the rule if there really is a rule.

(3)Kathy S. says:
Getting a dog has been really helpful in this area—I Have to walk the dog, so I get at least some exercise in there. Plus, he's very comforting when I am feeling depressed.

(4)Elk Whistle says:
If found that by praying or going to Mass or Church Daily during the week early in the morning around 6:00am helps make me get out of the Blues State. Then I love to exercise immediately after work about 5:30 or 6:00 pm when I get home to calm down. Especially when it is really hot outside and I go for a Run, Brisk Walk or Bicycling for few miles or longer. I feel all that stress and frustration coming out of my pores when I sweat. It is a real cleansing of the soul as well as the mind for me. Lately, I have been playing Basketball by myself after exercising to cool down and just focusing on how I lucky I am to be able to do all these things at my age 50 plus and Thank God for it.

Charlotte and Elizabeth: One of you mentioned feeling like a turtle in a racehorse world. I think you both might find the book The Highly Sensitive Person. It helped me to not feel like a loser just because I'm easily drained. HSP's can suffer from depression due to not fitting in, for feeling different, and exhaustion. For what it's worth...

Might make a great About Depression topic.

(6)Julie says:
Charlotte: Look into getting your food allergies checked.

(7)Dave says:
Yes this is a loaded one. This is the hardest thing for someone who is depressed to do anything more than they have to.

(8)Julian says.
I was under depression when I lost one year at college. I would take up the cycle in the evenings and go out on a furious ride around the city. It would make me very tired but then all my feeling of worthlessness would simply vanish. There has to be an adrenaline rush. Also music helped. I would simply switch off all the lights in the room and listen to my favourite songs on computer. I would tell myself that I am strong, I am a fighter and that I will not lose any battle in my life. I will fight and I will win. I would motivate myself a lot.
