Git-Mo No More

Git-Mo No More
Anyone who wondered or questioned President Obama's overarching principle of change, doubt no more The president signed an executive order that will effectively shut down the Guantanmo Bay prison camp that houses terrorist suspects within one year. He also directed that suspects be treated as specified in the U.S. Army Field Manuel.
President Obama said that more humane treatment of suspected terrorists would still allow “The United States'...to prosecute...terrorism..in a manner that is consistent with our value and ideals.” President Obama insisted in his inaugural address that the U.S. Would win the war on terror. His tone on the treatment of prisoners is nearly a polar opposite of GW Bush. Obama went on to say “we don't torture, but...we can still effectively obtain the intelligence we need.”
To some it may seem a dichotomy, but Obama seems to be saying the U.S. Will be tough on terrorism without violating the human rights of individuals involved in or suspected of being involved in terrorist actions.

Obama's actions were foreshadowed in June, 208 by “the Supreme Court 5-4 ruling that allowed terrorists awaiting military tribunals to appeal their cases to U.S. Civilian courts.”
Overall Democrats like the decision while Republicans did not. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) on the decision:
“The American people are going to wake tomorrow and be shocked to hear that a member of Al Qaeda has this same constitutional rights as an American citizen,” said Graham.
“[Even] the Nazis never had that night.”

The New York Times ran a story back in the sumer on the same issue, calling the Obama and McCain campaign rhetoric a “heated back and forth...debate that began last week [06/12/2008] when the Supreme Court ruled that detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba have the right to challenge their detention in federal court.” There seems to be no need for debate now as Obama's Executive Order has the teeth of the The Supreme Court ruling behind it.
